Israa Ghrayeb, a 21-year-old Palestinian from Bethlehem, died after allegedly being beaten and tortured by her Muslim brother after she posted a video on social media with a man who she was soon to be engaged to.
Her brother is a Canadian resident who tortured and killed her as an honour killing. Her crime? She dared to pose for a selfie with her boyfriend a day before their engagement.
According to the Sharia laws an honor killing is the homicide of a member of a family, due to the perpetrators' belief that the victim has brought shame or dishonor upon the family.
Shari'a honor killing is very common in the Muslim world, but it also happens in the West, in countries such as Britain, the United States and even the Netherlands.
